JUNE News from Bishopswood Ladies

June has been a month of mixed fortunes for the Ladies.

In the Stoneham Cup campaign we suffered another two defeats before signing off with a win in the final match. In the match at home with Rowlands Castle Mary Owen was our only success. Three days later we played our away match with Royal Winchester, again Mary was our only success. It was a blisteringly hot day and Mary finally closed out her match on the 22nd hole! Well done. The final match of this year’s campaign was the rescheduled match at home to Dunwood Manor. Finally the Ladies of Bishopswood gained a win, 4-3, to finish on a brighter note.

On the ‘friendly’ front, we played two matches during June, both away. The first match was at The Park, Avington, a deceptively difficult 9 hole course. Unfortunately we lost 3-1. The second match was away to Newbury Racecourse where we won 2½ - 1½.

The highlight of the month was undoubtedly the birthday party for Marion and Deani. The ‘Ascot Hats’ were wonderful, the afternoon tea was superb and everyone had a good time.

Don’t forget, there is a roll up every Wednesday unless it is the mid week medal day, all ladies are welcome to join in. If you are new to the game or new to the club, don’t be shy. It is a good way of meeting other ladies who were all beginners once, and some are still trying to achieve their first handicap.

MAY News from Bishopswood Ladies

May has not been a very successful month for the Ladies.

In the Stoneham Cup campaign we have suffered two defeats. In the match away to Rowlands Castle the nearest anyone got to a win was Sue Mortford who took her match to the 19th. A spectacular chip in from near a bunker on the 18th squared the match. This was witnessed by the rest of the team sitting on the clubhouse balcony, needless to say a great cheer went up! Sadley we were unable to field a complete team away to Dummer Manor though fortunately we did manage to raise the minimum number, 5. The only success was Jenny Lycett who battled back from 5 down after 11 to square the match on the 18th. She finally overcame her opponent on the 20th hole.

On the 'friendly' front, we played just one match during May when we welcomed the Ladies from Bradfield College to Bishopswood. This was a success with Bishopswood winning 2.5 - 1.5.

The County Centenary Foursomes was won by Sandy Moss and Carrie Heemskerk with 38 points. Sandy and carrie will represent Bishopswood at South Winchester in August.

News from Bishopswood Ladies - 10/04/08

The Ladies take part in a number of national, county, club and friendly events.

2008 did not start off very successfully, playing at Haddon Hill, Didcot, in March in the Mail on Sunday. It should have been a home game but had to be moved to Haddon Hill because of our winter tees. It is probably kindest to say we came second, however Pam achieved a morale boosting win. The competition has a handicap limit of 24 and is primarily limited to 7 Day and 5 Day + members if available.
The team comprised: Pam Best, Mary Owen, Jeanie McMullin, Rosemary Maybanks and Sue Morford.

Lorraine,
Jeanie and Pam at Andover          Early April has not been a lot better!

A team of three played at Andover in the National Nines competition again (we were drawn against them there last year) and met a similar fate. The match was a lot closer this year with Pam winning on the 17th and Jeanie taking her match to the 19th. The handicap limit was 28 this year and, again, it was a competition limited to 7 Day and 5 Day + members.

The team comprised:
Pam Best, Jeanie McMullin and Lorraine Woodward.

On the county front, Jeanie McMullin and Lorraine Woodward were selected to represent the club in the Knight Cup. They travelled to Wellow for the first round but were unfortunately beaten.

14 Ladies took part in the pre-season fun competition played over 9 holes on 19th March, this was followed by lunch and prizes for everyone! The winner was Mhairi Stone, the runner up was Rosemary Maybanks on countback from Alison Goudge, Lorraine Woodward and Peggy Rolston.

There will continue to be a Ladies’ Roll-Up at 10.00 a.m. on Wednesday mornings except when it is a mid-month medal. All ladies are welcome to come along, it doesn’t matter if you are a beginner, all are welcome.

Last year the Ladies decided to join in Breast Cancer Campaign’s Golf Challenge at Bronze Level to raise a minimum of £100 by the end of the season. This is the charity supported by Darren Clarke. The ladies were asked to consider donating 20p (or more) every time they played, simply putting their money in the pink tin in the pro shop. Many thanks to all who contributed as we were able to send £117 to the charity. This year we will continue, the tin is still in the pro shop and we invite all gentlemen to consider contributing whenever they play as Breast Cancer also affects men.

One final note, the application forms for the Ladies Open on Thursday 4th September are now available. They will be sent out to everyone who has participated in the past and to most of the clubs in Hampshire, some in Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire within the next few days. More Detail

The Ladies take part in a number of national, county, club and friendly events.

2007 did not start off very successfully, playing at South Winchester in February in the Mail on Sunday. It is probably kindest to say we came second. The competition has a handicap limit of 24 and is primarily limited to 7 Day and 5 Day + members.
The team comprised: Alison Goudge, Martina Stack, Pam Best, Jeanie McMullin and Christine Mason.

March was not a lot better! A team of three played at Andover in the National Nines competition and met a similar fate. The handicap limit was 30 and again it was a competition limited to 7Day and 5 Day + members.
The team comprised: Mary Owen, Lorraine Woodward and Joyce Easteal.

The first Club Medal of the season was the March mid-Month. Division C was won by Jeanie McMullin.

The April LGU medal was contested by 12 ladies. Mary Owen won Silver Division and Donna Eustace won Bronze Division.

On April 24th the ladies played the qualifying round for the 2007 Peugeot Coronation Foursomes. Carrie Heemskerk and Christine Mason won with 33 points and have been entered in the Regional Final at South Bedfordshire in August.

On the county front, Jeanie McMullin and Mary Owen were selected to represent the club in the Knight Cup. They won their first round match at Weybrook Park by 2 holes and now travel to Cams Hall at Fareham for the second round.

The first match in the Stoneham Cup was played in April. This county competition is open to all ladies with a handicap limit of 26, from whom a team of 7 is chosen. The first match against Hartley Wintney was well supported, special thanks to the Captain and all who wished the Ladies luck. It was a very good start to the campaign, winning 6 – 1.
The team comprised: Bel Goss, Alison Goudge, Mary Owen, Jennie Lycett, Martina Stack, Mhairi Stone and Christine Mason.

The first friendly match of the season was at Andover which we lost 3-1. The team comprised: Mary Owen, Alison Goudge, Christine Mason, Jeanie McMullin, Lorraine Woodward, Joyce Easteal and Pat Abby. Unfortunately we couldn’t find a full team but Andover lent us their Junior Organiser, he was a good partner who contributed to the one win!

The Ladies have decided to join in Breast Cancer Campaign’s Golf Challenge at Bronze Level to raise a minimum of £100 by the end of the season. This is the charity supported by Darren Clarke. The ladies have been asked to consider donating 20p (or more) every time they play, simply putting their money in the pink tin in the pro shop. We would be very pleased if any gentlemen choose to contribute as well. Joyce Easteal will have some Jigsaw pins, the charity’s logo, and other merchandise for sale shortly. The ‘End of Season’ event will have a ‘PINK’ theme to raise extra cash so the target is quite attainable.
