Winning Team-Weybrook Park G C
The event ran like clockwork thanks to the sterling work of Jackie and Alison, who checked everyone in and sorted out all scores, ably assisted by Dave Bridge, who kept track of everything on his computer. Dave took all the team photos and helped to keep the event on time by also taking on the role of starter.
Lee and Peter had again prepared the course superbly and Bel, Gordon and the rest of the clubhouse staff produced fine food and the usual friendly service for our members and guests. Everyone was full of praise for the day’s activities and are looking forward to coming back again next year.

BISHOPSWOOD SENIORS MARCH ON
The Bishopswood seniors’ team of Chris Ashfield, Norman Humphrey, Norman Paget and Alan Willats notched up
another fine win to reach the quarter finals of the National Seniors Classic Competition. They took on the team
from Farlington G C, at home and came out winners by three matches to one. Chris Ashfield and Alan Willats halved
their matches and Norman Humphrey and Norman Paget won theirs. The match was played in the usual fine spirit of
seniors’ games and everyone enjoyed the day. In the next round we have an away draw against Mannings Heath GC.
So we wish the team the best of luck.
With the change in the weather there came a change in the fortunes of Bishopswood Seniors in their inter-club matches. It has been a busy period with nine matches played of which we won three and lost six. Most painful has been the loss of three home matches, which will be difficult to reverse. Never mind the company has been good and the club has scored high marks for its food and the condition of the course. Well done the restaurant team and ground crew.
However, on the golf front this period has not been all bad news. Our team entered in the National Seniors Club Classic notched up another victory at home against Naunton Downs GC. Chris Ashfield and Norman Paget halved their matches and Steve Cox won his and then went on to clinch the match on the nineteenth. In the next round, on 18th July, we again play at home against a team from the Bristol area, Farrington GC. Our team will be: Chris Ashfield, Steve Cox, Norman Humphrey and Norman Paget. We again wish them success. The other good news came in the Newbury and Crookham Seniors Open, which was won by Alan Bulpitt with 40 points. A super win, for which we offer him our heartiest congratulations.
The June Seniors’ Stableford was won by Peter West with 41 points and the runner-up was Alan Willats also with 41 points. Another tie occurred in the June Seniors’ Medal and count back was again employed to determine that the winner was Alan Scott with Barry Tinker runner-up, both with net 71.

Our Seniors’ team in the National Team Classic competition had another good win this month against Naunton Downs G C but it was a close run thing. Chris Ashfield and Norman Paget halved their matches and Alan Willats found his opponent too good on the day. Hence once again we relied on Steve Cox, in the last match, winning to keep the tie alive. This he did 4 & 2 and so again was faced with a sudden death play-off, starting at the first. But this time Steve only needed the one hole to secure the victory. So well done Bishopswood Seniors.

Following our early season successes a fall had to come and this was in the form of consecutive losses away against Sandfors Springs and Badgemore Park. However, we were able to reverse the result in the home matches and in addition to which we had a home win against Winter Hill. Hence the results are still in our favour.
The May Seniors' Medal was won by Brian Jones with a net 64 and the next best player was Bill Owen with a net 72. A testimony of just how well Brian must have played.
Our team was successful in the first round of the National Club Classic, away against Wellow GC but only after Steve Cox managed to win the second play-off hole. In the next round on 16th June we play, at home, against a team from the Cheltenham area, Naunton Downs GC. Our team will be: Chris Ashfield, Steve Cox, Norman Paget ans Alan Willats. We wish them every success.
Congratulations go to two of our recent additions Martin Smith and Jackie, who sneaked away earlier in the month and won the Barton-on-Sea, Invitation Salver. This was not a Seniors' event, so greater the glory.

Bishopswood Seniors have got off to a good start to the match season. The season started with a drawn match at Dummer, followed by three home wins against Bradfield College, Royal Ascot and Hartley Wintney. Next up was the triangular match against Tylney Park and Bearwood, which we hosted this year. This is usually a close run affair where the home team wins by a few points. This year the home team did indeed win but the margin of victory over second place Tylney Park was 25 points and 73 points over Bearwood. Next year Tylney Park will be the hosts so I am sure we will face a sterner test.
On the domestic front Norman Humphrey won the first Seniors’ Medal with a net 65 and runner-up was Ben Taylor with a net 67.
Our over 50s Gales team, which included 7 members who qualify as Seniors, went down at home 2½ to 6½ to Alton. The next representative match for our seniors is the National Club Classic for which, in the first round, we have drawn Wellow G. C. away. Our team will be: Steve Cox, Norman Humphrey, Norman Paget and Alan Willats with reserves Chris Ashfield & Dave Taylor. We wish them every success in our first year at this event.
The draw for this years Seniors Matchplay Competition took place 10/04/08.

The Seniors’ season is already underway with 33 turning out for our pre-season stableford, which was won by Jim Holmes. Matches have also started well with a draw away and a win at home. Roll-ups continue throughout the year on Wednesdays and Fridays plus qualifying medals and stablefords at the beginning and end of each month. In addition there are matches most weeks throughout the summer.
So if you are over 55 there is plenty of friendly golf from which to choose, keep checking the notice board and join in the great camaraderie, which is seniors’ golf.

It seems like only a few weeks ago we were looking forward to the new season and yet it is now November and winter is looming. But as they say time flies when you are enjoying yourself and Bishopswood Seniors certainly know how to do that.
It has been another full season of matches and other events, which have been well supported by the over 55’s and our numbers of regular participants has risen to 39. On completion of the match season we had won 18, drawn 2 and lost 12 and no matches had to be cancelled or curtailed, which was quite surprising given the bad weather that we had in the middle part of the season. All the matches were played in the usual good spirit, with plenty of good hearted banter and I am pleased to report that all the fixtures are in place with the same clubs next season.
The Seniors Matchplay was completed in October and, an in form, Alan Willats narrowly beat Peter West in the final. Our thanks must go to Ian Melrose, who has presented the club with a splendid silver quaich for this event. The trophy will be called ‘The Isobella Trophy’, to recall the birth of Ian’s first grandchild in his Captain’s year of 2006, which was also the year that Ian won the event. The seniors again beat the Ladies but as usual it was a close run affair. The last event of our season was the Autumn Stableford, which was won by Dave Taylor with 41 points. The runner-up, on count-back, was Norman Humphrey with 39 points and Alan Bulpitt was third, also with 39 points. The secret nine went to David Bowers with 20 points.
It only remains for me to thank Bel and David and their clubhouse staff for the splendid, good humoured service throughout the season, Gordon for the fine meals, Lee and Peter for their preparation of the course, Pauline and Jackie for their work on our behalf and all my senior colleagues, who have entered and played in the matches and other seniors’ events with such good spirit.

The summer months have proved to be a good time for Bishopswood Seniors. The Five Day Winter Knockout was finally wrapped up by one of our rookies, Steve Cox and this was quickly followed by another rooky, Steve Choules, winning the Scratch Championship. Members and Guest Day was won by another of our new recruits Martin Smith, ably assisted by his partner Nick Leonard. Martin followed this up the following weekend with the ‘A’ Division of the Mike Collin’s Medal. Not to be left out, John Davis and Brian Chapman won the Captain’s Trophy and this was swiftly followed by Don White, who won the Captain’s Prize for five day members.
Congratulations also go to Ron Cupit, winner of the Age Concern Stableford, Derek Andrew, winner of the August Seniors’ Stableford, Alan Willats winner of the August Seniors’ Medal, Bill Owen, winner of the Vets Trophy and to Brian Jones winner of the Jim Maguire Memorial Trophy. This last event had a record entry for a Bishopswood Seniors’ competition, with 46 participants, which included six ladies.
Our Inter-Club Matches are continuing to be well supported and currently we still have more wins than losses to our credit but this could change as we still have five more matches to complete the season.
David G Williams.
LUCKY! LUCKY! LUCKY!
There must be some very righteous seniors, as our Seniors’ Invitation Day was blest with glorious weather.
This is the day in the year when we invite teams, from the clubs with whom we play inter-club games,
to join us for a 27 hole stableford competition.
As usual Lee and Peter had prepared the course superbly and Bel, David, Gordon and the rest of the clubhouse staff produced fine food and the usual friendly service for our members and guests.
Sandford Springs team, Gordon Whickman, Peter Currey and Derek Jones, were the winners and received the claret jug trophy. DLO Andover, who had won the event in the two previous years, took second place and third place went to Bradfield College. Each member of the top three teams received an engraved glass memento.
The tankard for the highest scoring Bishopswood player went to David Bowers (52pts) with runner-up Ron Cupit (51pts). All the prizes were presented by our club Captain, John Drake.
The event ran like clockwork thanks to the sterling work of Jackie and Alison, who checked everyone in and sorted out all scores, ably assisted by Nigel Courtenay, plus Dave Bridge, who produced all the score sheets. John helped to keep the event on time by also taking on the role of starter. Although he tells me that many players seemed to be taken aback by being announced on the first tee and promptly put their balls in the firs. However, everyone was full of praise for the day’s activities and were looking forward to coming back again next year.

On Friday was the return match, at home, with the DLO Andover Golf Society. For this event there is a trophy, which was presented three years ago by Lt. Col. Frank Ham and has been held by the DLO since its inception. (The fixture dates back about 20 years.) In our first match of the season we lost to the DLO, at Tidworth Garrison G C, by 3 matches to 2. A sterling effort by our team brought about a home win by 4 matches to 1. Hence Bishopswood took the trophy, this year, by an aggregate of 7 matches to 3. The trophy, depicting a golfer in an army red shirt, will appear in our trophy cabinet for the next year, if we can find the room.

It seems that we have only just started the 2007 season but already we have completed nearly a half of our matches. So far the results are slightly in our favour. We have won seven, halved one and lost five. Congratulations must go to our mixed team, captained by Frank Head, who beat Weybrook Park 4.5 to 0.5. This is the first time in the last three years that we have managed to win this fixture, at home or away. Congratulations must also go to Brian Green and Dave Taylor, two of our recent recruits, who won the Charity Cup.
Our team, captained by Ian Melrose, performed well in our annual triangular match played this year at Bearwood, finishing second, just one point behind the winners Tylney Park. This is the first time that the event has been won by a visiting club.
The team representing Bishopswood Seniors, in the National Nines at Horne Park, was Steve Cox, Dave Taylor and Alan Willats. Although finishing ahead of the gents team, they did not amass enough points to take them onto the final in Jersey.
Two rounds of the Seniors’ Stableford Cup have now been played, the first won by David Williams and the second by Chris Ashfield. But with four rounds of the event still to go the field is wide open.
